minute shopping trip. or even to get a jump on holiday travel. good afternoon and thanks for joining us. this is while snow is pummeling parts of the west and pacific northwest, with road closures and backups. in the northeast, are experiencing record highs. temperatures today will be in the 50's and 60's and expected to get even warmer by christmas. jericka duncan is in new york's central park with the latest. >> it's beautiful today, absolutely incredible. jericka: at 52 degrees in buffalo, it was beautiful enough for waders and walks in the park. in a city that was slammed by 7 feet of lake effect snow last year, temperatures this week are more likely to inspire long walks on the beach. eric fisher: that's certainly right, look at buffalo on wednesday. up to 61 degrees. one of many record highs to be set from great lakes down to ohio valley. the focus on christmas eve moves to the northeast down to the mid-atlantic. numerous record highs. we're talking 60's and 70's.

mollie: let's check in with kurtis because along with warmer temperatures we are looking at the possibility of rain. kurtis: it has been an unusual fall and it will be an unusual winter. we did have followed and i wanted to point out some locations with limited his ability around a order mile in clarion -- around a quarter mile in clarion. look at this pretty shot of the christmas dog in car with, iowa. cloudy to mostly cloudy skies, southeast wind gets breezy as the afternoon goes along. even through the overnight, 2:00 a.m. temperature around 40 these with rain arriving after that. christmas eve, we could get flurries during the morning. late day sun. the high as 45 with mostly cloudy and could see rain very late with southeast wind.
rain and maybe snow. mollie: more accusations against former multi-state lottery security director eddie tipton. kansas lottery officials reported last night that they believe tipton fixed two jackpots there, both worth thousands of dollars. tipton already has been convicted of rigging the $16.5 million dollar hot lotto jackpot. that happened here in iowa in 2010. but now, kansas officials say tipton traveled to kansas in december 2010 and bought two tickets to the '2-by-2' game. those two tickets were both winners worth $22,000 each. officials allege that tipton then gave the winning tickets to two other people to claim on his behalf. the new allegations mean tipton now is accused of fixing jackpots in five states: oklahoma, colorado, wisconsin, iowa, and now kansas. but at least 37 other states also are investigating tipton. services have been set for long-time madrid football coach
unexpectedly sunday from a heart attack at the age of 58. hinkel coached at madrid for 29 years. his tigers made the playoffs 25 of the last 26 seasons, winning a state title in 1991. services for hinkel will be held tomorrow at the madrid junior/senior high school. visitation is from 4:00-7:00 with the funeral following. in commitment 2016 news, fox news channel will host a republican debate in des moines next month. bret baier, megyn kelly and chris wallace will anchor the two hour debate january 28th at the iowa events center. they moderated the first gop debate in august. a cyber-security breach at a dam in new york state has authorities concerned. hackers were able to breach the software and take over control of the flood gates. the concern now is that the breach was a dry run for a larger attack on a larger target. rene marsh reports, new at noon. rene: iranian hackers
that controls the flood gates of this rye, new york dam, just 20 miles outside of new york city. a former u.s. official familiar with the investigation revealed the classified details from 2013, first reported by the wall street journal. paul rosenberg is mayor of the village of rye brook. paul rosenberg: what it says to me is they're looking at everything. was this a dress rehearsal for something larger? it also makes me concerned about the security of our infrastructure that is significantly more critical than the bowman avenue dam. rene: investigators believe the intruders were just probing to see what they could get into but no damage was done. hacking of dam controls have long been a homeland security concern. in 2013, hackers penetrated a sensitive database of u.s. dams maintained by the army corps of engineers. asked about the breach involving the dam in rye, new york, the department of homeland security told cnn by email it has "no
incident." mollie: just last week, there was another major breach at the computer company juniper networks. the company sells computer network equipment and routers to the defense department, justice department, fbi, and treasury department. saying enrique marquez still presents a danger to the community, a federal judge in southern california has denied bond for the man accused of buying the assault rifles used in the san bernardino massacre that left 14 dead. the isis inspired attack was carried out by marquez's longtime friend, syed farook, and farook's wife, tashfeen malik. in world headlines, iraq says its troops have made the most significant advance into the city of ramadi since it fell to isis terrorists in may. losing ramadi was a major blow to the iraqi government, and was the biggest defeat since isis swept through areas in the country's north and west in the summer of 2014. a different story in afghanistan, where britain

mollie: it's official. the winter solstice has arrived. today marks the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, when the sun appears at its most southerly position. and it's also the day that thousands of people descend on britain's stonehenge. the ceremony took place on what may have been the mildest december 22nd in 105 years in britain. the prehistoric monument is carefully aligned on a sight-line that points to the winter solstice sunset. archaeologists believe stonehenge was constructed from 3000 b.c. to 2000 b.c. the winter solstice in britain was a time when livestock was slaughtered so the animals would not have to be fed during the winter, and the majority of wine and beer was finally fermented. take a look at this. success for the company spacex. it launched a falcon rocket last night with 11 small satellites on board, and for the first time, landed the 15-story leftover booster back on earth safely at cape canaveral, florida. in june, spacex's falcon 9 rocket failed shortly after liftoff, destroying a supply

northern oklahoma in the 60's and early in the newscast we talked about the heat off to the east. high pressure moving out, this is the rainmaker through the early morning. somewhat colder air will come in on the backside of this and we could mix in some snow in northwestern iowa. futurecast, morning rain around 4:00 a.m. there is was snow before noon that kind of falls apart east. then rain in eastern iowa early on christmas eve. we could get flurries but these will be on through and the clouds will decrease late in the day. rainfall amounts look to be heavy along the many sit -- mississippi river. 6/10 to 8/10 of an inch looks to be just shy of 3/10 of an inch. some more rain on the way, obviously we don't need it it is

eric: for patients, one night in the icu is one night too many. krista hill: this is the worst time of their lives. eric: the guy in room 5 only knows he's somewhere in the triple digits. shawn norman: it's a genetic disease that i possess. eric: shawn norman is 28. he was a kid when doctors first said "noonan syndrome". shawn norman: it can make you tired. it can make you weak. it can make you face death. rita norman: it's all heart-related. it's very complicated. it's not very well known. eric: other than you spend a lot of time dreaming what you'd do when you get out of the icu. shawn's mom couldn't single-handedly grant his first wish: electing donald trump. but a couple paramedics helped her with another. busting him out, right past the white board where his big goal still read, "get out of here to see 'star wars.'" tom norman: that's kind of been the goal of his. every time he feels down or

shawn norman: i like han. eric: the hospice nurse by his side had already officially taken over. and his parents? they were telling themselves this is what he wants. rita norman: it's tough, but i have to fulfill his wish. i have to. eric: for 2 hours and 16 minutes, the guy who's already decided to donate his body to science soaked in every frame. rita norman: we are making memories, and not everybody gets to do that. eric: once the lights came up, the guy on the stretcher was so exhausted, he mustered only a two-word review. shawn norman: not bad. eric: and a few final hugs. tom norman: ok. should we get you home? shawn norman: uh-huh. tom norman: ok. alright. let's get you home. eric: where the guy who's only 28 wants his story to end. rita norman: it's his call. eric: shawn got 2 visitors over the weekend. darth vader and a storm trooper from the 501st legion, who drew one more big smile. tonight, hospice is helping him
